Besides being an annoyance, possums pose a serious environmental threat to New Zealand's Rain Forest. The possum is not native to New Zealand, but was imported in the 1830's by fur farmers to supply the demand for possum fur in Australia. Then, the fur farms closed in the 1850's and the possums were released into the wild. With no natural predators, the possum thrived in the country's lush rainforest. Since that time, the possum population has skyrocketed to an estimated 90 million. Collectively, possums eat 21,000 tons of foliage daily, threatening the delicate ecosystem. Today, the overpopulation is a serious environmental danger to New Zealand and there are several eradication programs underway.
