Shani Waugh

Home Town - Bunbury, W.A.

What got you into golf? Who Helped You. Who encouraged you ?

Both my Parents love playing Golf. I was surrounded by the game from a young age. Began taking it seriously when I was 13-14 y.o. Encouraged by my father Robert, mother Robyn, Peter Hastie (Junior co-ordinator at Bunbury G.C.), Jessica Clyde (State player who lived in Bunbury), Ross Metherall - State Coach.

Brief playing history

First swung a club - 6mths old. Wanted to play left handed but dad said "there aren't any good left handed golfers in the world" So had to learn to play right handed. First played junior golf for WA in 1985, Senior Golf in 1986 and turned Pro in 1991.

Who are the people who have most influenced you ?

Father Robert, Mother Robyn, Peter Hastie (Bunbury Junior Co-ordinator) Jessica Clyde ( WA State player), Ross Metherall (first coach), Lawrencee Farmer (first coach as Pro), Dick Harmen & Dr Jim Suttie - current coaches.

What do you recall as your greatest moments in your career and how did it make you feel ?

1989 WA State Team won Gladys Hay Memorial Cup for the first time. It was great to win in a team situation. We could celebrate with and for all the women golfers in W.A.

Golf is a very selfish sport. Being able to share a victory like that one was incredible.

What are your greatest challenges ?

Maintain my concentration levels during a tournament round.

Trying to raise my game a notch or three, to be competitive week in and week out with the Karrie Webbs, Juli Inkstors and Annika Sorenstams of this world !

Where do you see yourself today and where do you want to be in 5 years ?

Today - Enjoying competing on the LPGA, ELPGA abnd ALPG. Travelling, meeting great people and seeing new places.

5 Years Time - Sharing my life with a huusband and a couple of children. Possibly not much golf going on !!

What feelings motivate you when playing in high level competition ?

I love to test my ability under the most intense pressure. Being in contention to win any tournament is a great test of my nerve and skill (if any).

Experiencing people reacting to my play (good or bad) is also a great feeling.

What do you do when you are not playing golf ?

I love playing tennis, boogie boarding, reading, listening to music, dancing, eating with my friends and SLEEPING.

I also like to watch pretty much any sport. Especially Aussie Rules which I really miss when I am away. UP THE EAGLES !!
