I
had not played but a few
games of golf since returning
to Australia from the USA
in 1990. I recently joined
Rossdale Golf Club in Aspendale
Victoria with the idea of
playing more regularly for
exercise and relaxation.
At the same time, I upgraded
my 15 year old clubs to
a set of Wilson Fat Shaft
II Irons (3-pw) and Wilson
Fat Shaft II Metal Matrix
driver, 3, 5 and 7 woods.
Wow,
what a difference! Bigger
faces and newer technology
have given me significant
improvement in accuracy
and distance. My thanks
to Kel Garner, the Pro at
Rossdale for his patience
and for matching me up with
my Fat Shafts.
And
a few lessons from Danny
Meyers at the Seaford Driving
Range in Victoria have greatly
improved my swing technique,
so now my long game is the
envy of my husband. I just
need to work on my short
game ... somehow good chips
just seem to elude me!

I’ve
recently returned to golf
after a two year lay off,
during which time I got
married and had a baby.
I took my old clubs out
for a round and I was really
disheartened at how difficult
I was finding it to hit
them. My husband (who is
a golf professional) suggested
that I have a club fit done,
and after much tinkering,
I am now the proud owner
of some new, custom built
irons. They are not a “name
brand”, but instead, the
shaft length and flex, and
the club heads, have all
been selected with my swing
in mind. (I am a 40 handicapper,
so I don’t have tremendous
swing speed). I can’t begin
to tell you how great they
feel – and I am hitting
the ball better than I was
two years ago when I stopped
playing!!!! (Bye, bye 40
handicap!!!!)
I
can’t recommend enough to
other lady golfers, particularly
beginners, how important
it is to have your clubs
fitted by a professional.
Whether they match you up
with an off the shelf brand,
or whether they will have
to make up your clubs from
scratch, it will be well
worth your time and effort.
Too many lady golfers take
up the game playing with
their husband’s cast-offs,
without ever realising how
much damage they will do
to their golfing potential
by playing with clubs that
are too long, too heavy,
and with too little flex
in the shaft. The cost is
not overly prohibitive,
and for beginners in particular,
playing with a half set
of good clubs, will far
exceed playing with a full
set of clubs that don’t
suit you.
Happy
golfing everyone!

A
year ago I lashed out and
bought myself a new set
of clubs and it is the best
investment I have made in
a long time. I live in Benalla,
Victoria so it was a two
trip to Yarra Yarra (Melbourne
Club) to purchase them and
I loved them as soon as
I tried them.
The
irons are Callaway Steelhead
X 14 Gems and the woods
are Big Bertha Steelhead.
They did cost a lot of money
considering I am only on
a handicap of 20 but I believe
a good craftsman need good
tools.
They
are well balanced and just
great in every way. I do
not have a driver however
I have a 3,5,7 and 9 woods.
I think perhaps I should
have purchased a driver
to get more distance off
the tee but in the past
I am incline to spray the
driver. The 7 wood and I
just don't get on but many
of my friends swear by theirs.
My
game has definitely improved
and now I can't blame the
clubs.

For
my Christmas present my husband
bought me my first driver. I
have been playing for a few
years casually and joined Chatswood
Golf Club last year to get more
serious about my game.
I
have been using my 3 wood as
my driver and although I can
sometimes hit it 160 - 170 metres
I was looking forward to get
a good driver. I
had tried my husband's Titleist
driver and found it difficult
to hit so was a little apprehensive
as to whether I can hit a driver.
We
were on out Christmas holidays
on the Gold Coast and deceided
to look at the golf shops there
and dropped into the House of
Golf store. We were actually
looking at getting a name brand
driver believing that it is
easier to sell later but they
did not have any PING lady drivers
in stock. They did have some
other brands and some second
hand ladies drivers including
a Callaway so we decided to
try them out.
The
sales assistant also suggested
that he measure my swing speed
to determine the correct shaft.
I was not finding anything that
great to hit in what we had
selected so far but as I was
hitting at 75mph, I go to the
gym at least 4 times a week,
it was recommended I try a senior
shafted driver.
He
returned with a Nickent
Genex 425 Forged driver
something exclusive to House
of Golf, we had seen in
Sydney also, but not a name
brand and at $850 at the
name brand price. He said
it was the equivalent if
not better quality. It had
a senior shaft, 11°
of loft and a huge head
of 425cc. Because of the
attractive maroon colour
it did not look too big.
Straight
away I found it easier to hit
with in the net, maybe the big
face on the big head, the balance
or the shaft. This was it we
bought it there and then.
Over
the last couple of weeks I have
been getting more used to it,
although having a share hooks
and slices being a 36 handicapper,
when I have gotten on to it
it is magnificent to hit, straight,
high and longer than I have
ever hit. Well worth it.
