Golf Tips

One great way to improve your game is to learn from the pros. ANNE ROLLO (Sydney) is one of our participating professional. She teaches and runs clinics throughout the year. Log onto to her profile on our site and contact her for her latest clinics. Here's Anne's TIP OF THE MONTH

Mental Tips Last time you had a good series of shots down the fairway and then three putted, what did you walk off the green thinking? Probably some unprintable words about your putting. Next time try concentrating on the good shots not the bad and see how it helps your game.

Next time you hit a shot that you are not happy with try this technique to help you stay optimistic. It's called the FUDGE, FIX, FORGET, FOCUS.

FUDGE - It's human to be annoyed, say something silently to yourself if you like.

FIX - Have a practice swing - imagine how you should have done it.

FORGET - Everyone hits bad shots , forget it.

FOCUS - Approach your next shot in a positive manner.

Sally Smith ( Sydney) is one of our participating pros. Here is her "Thoughts on Putting"

In my teaching I find many people come to me to work on their golf swing. Over time they improve their swing and they feel they are hitting the ball better but their scores or handicap do not improve. We try to establish the exact area of their game that is letting them down. Many discover that the main area is putting.

Putting is almost half of the game of golf and sometimes the most neglected from a teaching aspect. Not many people have putting lessons because they feel they should be able to sort it out themselves. Just like any other shot in golf you cannot see what you are doing.

I am going to concentrate on what I think is the single most important aspect of putting for the average player. That is SPEED. No matter how well you set up, aim, read greens or how great your stroke is , if you do not develop a feel for the speed of a green you open yourself to 3 putting.

The idea on long putts or any putts is to hole the ball. The next best option is leaving the ball in a position which makes the next put easy or even a tap-in.

Decide on what distance you are confident with for your short puts. Research says about 20-30 cms is a good length. Practice rolling your puts into a semi circle of this width behind the hole. If you can do this you are making your next putt a definite and also giving your first put a chance of going in.

Practice this for 10m putts both uphill and downhill to get better speed control.

Remember all pros spend hours at a tournament aclimatizing themselves to the speed of the greens for that particular week. If it is good enough for them its good enough for you.

Another Tip from participating pro Carmen Railtons (Qld)

How is your ball lying? Invariably players walk up to their shots and don't take notice of how their ball is lying. More often than not there are downhill, uphill, sidehill, ball above and ball below. All these situations require variations to ball position and stance. Call your local female professional for advice on how to execute these shots.
